What Else Is Being Said?

(The podcast may take a while to load but it's definitely worth the wait.)This podcast takes you through a schools experience with a school shooting and a students experience. The mistakes they made and how they have recovered from it. This podcast expresses many points that I have not discussed yet point. One would be that schools are actually the safest place you could be but sometimes incidents do happen and even though school violence rarely reaches the stage of a school shooting each school should still have a plan. This podcast also mentions some of the prevention methods I mentioned in my first post and more. It mentions some studies that were done and the cause of most school violence. Hopefully this podcast will be as informational for you as it was for me.

Survey Results

My last blog was about how to prevent school violence and what to do if any kind of violence occurred at your school. In that blog I pointed out that since school violence is becoming a huge problem every student should be aware of what to do if violence occurs at their school. I conducted a survey to see how many students actually knew what to do. I surveyed twenty students at my school, five freshmen, five sophomore, five juniors, and five seniors. The results show that most students don't know what to do. Although some students did say yes when I asked them what they would do. They told me what they would do personally not a plan that the school had constructed for them to do. Also the plans they mentioned are pretty unrealistic and or not very safe. I could tell that all the students I surveyed had never really thought about school violence. 4 out of five freshmen said they wouldn't know what to do which is sort of understandable. Freshmen are new to the school but 4 out of five seniors also said no. They've been coming to the same school for four years but yet most of them don't know what to do. All the seniors that answered said that the school has never had a plan. Some other students mentioned that there middle school went over it but high school never has. High school is where most violence occurs! I found another survey on school violence. This survey asked questions to high school students about violence that had occurred in their school and if they had been a victim of violence. 1 in 4 high school students said they had been a victim of violence at there school.Thirteen of student said they brought a weapon to school. Comparing my survey with this other survey is kind of scary. Violence is increasing and awareness about violence is decreasing when it should be the opposite. Hopefully by conducting this survey I have increased awareness of school violence. Hopefully over time ever school in the country will have a plan.
